The Claws
review for "The Grudge" Out of
four stars: *1/2 After
hearing so much hype on how great "The Grudge" is, I have decided to
see the movie for myself and boy I have to tell it was just that: hype. I'll
admit there were some scary (if not startling) moments, especially in those
scenes where you least expect. Unfortunately, there were too many expected
scares to be scared, and too few storylines for me to recommend this movie. The movie
stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as a foreign exchange student in Japan who is
working for an elderly daycare center. She's actually a subsitute for a
regular who was mysteriously killed in her client's home. The
client's home it is said to have been (what else) haunted by ghost family
that was killed by the patriarch, who then later committed suicide. Since
then, people who have tried to live there have been killed by the ghosts, who is
now after Gellar. She of course tries to unravel the mystery of what is
really happening there. Now, I
have never seen the Japanese version of the film, which was said to have
been very popular, but why was it called "The Grudge?" Why
the vendetta on innocent people who are just trying to live their own lives?
Why not the grudge against the patriarch who killed the family living there
prior to other people? Some
scenes, especially the ending, were so utterly predictable that the writers
actually forgot that people were supposed to be scared by the unexpected,
but it failed miserably. Also the ending did not provide closure, leaving
the "that's-it?" impression on the viewer. This movie was just a pathetic excuse to play with people's nerves without having a thought on how to execute the storyline. You are much better off listening to campfire fires than to watch this pretentious crap. |
