BY THE BOOK

The Fazi, whose ultraregulated culture ranges from strict conversation protocols to unvarying building designs, inhabit half of a planet discovered by the Enterprise. But after a disasterous first contact with the ruler of the Fazi, Archer must depend on Vulcan science officer T'Pol and communication specialist Hoshi Sato to help him mend relations with the people of this planet, and unravel the mystery of the other creatures living on the world.

Review by Roger D. Noriega (minor spoilers herein)

The first novel of the groundbreaking new Star Trek series Enterprise. By The Book deals with Enterprise's first contact with the Fazi, a race of people that live by a rigid set of protocols - no speaking out of turn, no standing out of place, no topics which should not be discussed. Captain Archer is excited about this first contact as it will be Earth's first - without the Vulcan's getting in the way. Archer wants to do this one right, too bad that he doesn't listen to his first officer nor the rest of his crew for that matter. Archer pushes forward and he screws up the first contact only because he didn't listen to his crew.

After some additional preparation, Archer decides to investigate the southern continent and there the crew discovers another life form which attacks the crew members and seems to drive them insane.

Ensigns Cutler, Mayweather, Sato and crewmember Anderson decide to play an old-fashioned RPG! Seems like the bridge on Mars is the undoing for these RPG'ers, but the adventure provides a great backdrop to what is happening in the "real" world.

Action is rather light, but the mystery surrounding the two races is great. The story moves well and this adventure is anything but By The Book. On Roger’s Book Rating Scale of 1 to 10, this adventure rates a 7.
