NCC-1647. U.S.S. Farragut. Captain John "Jack" T. Carter is recently promoted to the Captaincy of the aforementioned starship and almost immediately Captain Carter and Crew are summoned to investigate the possible disappearance of another Starship and its crew on assignment in the Diotama system, near the Neutral Zone facing the Klingons.
"What do they call this? Baptism under fire?"
"Let's hope we don't get burned."

Upon viewing this episode, I could not help but feel that this production could easily fit into the era of James T. Kirk. In fact, it is established in the episode that Captains Carter & Kirk were classmates of history in the academy - nice bit of back story that will also play out later in the episode with Kirk. Didn't Temporal Investigations refer to Kirk as a menace? As far as this story is concerned, some of the players would say yes.
The story moves along rather well and what I found most attractive was the banter between the heroes. They have a sense of humor and some of the lines may have been a bit overboard, but most was not - people really act this way. The special effects are acceptable and when you spy upon the cloaked Klingon weapons on the planet and up in orbit, the beauty is to be appreciated.
The episode in clever in its use of technobabble, it is rather light and it does seem to make sense. The primary protagonist has very little to do even though the entire story revolves around his machinations - too bad though. It does make note to establish him as a regular player in this series and if you remember your Star Trek history, you should get the irony here.
My primary complaint would be the lousy aim of the Klingon henchmen - they can't shoot! I wonder if these same guys were trained by these guys here?
This program is obviously made by fans for fans. It is good stuff and for their first outing, well done! Take the time to watch, it is worth it!
